Delaware Tax Relief

Over the past several years, the state of Delaware has seen its operating capital dwindle. The Delaware Department of Revenue has grown increasingly aggressive toward delinquent taxpayers. Interest and penalties on back taxes are often pursued to the fullest extent of the law in Delaware, with little leniency.

However, Governor Jack Markell and Division of Revenue Director Patrick T. Carter recently announced the launch of Delaware’s Voluntary Tax Compliance Initiative (VCTI). The VTCI is a one-time tax amnesty program geared to help individuals and businesses file outstanding tax returns and pay off their outstanding State of Delaware tax liabilities. From September 1st to October 30th, any individual or business taxpayer who registers to file any outstanding tax returns and/or pay their current outstanding State of Delaware tax liability administered by the Division of Revenue will have their penalty and interest fees waived. If you take advantage of this one-time tax amnesty program, you must pay all balances in full by June 30, 2010.

To take advantage of this one time, beneficial tax amnesty offer, taxpayers must register with the State of Delaware by October 30th. Remember that Delaware’s Division of Revenue takes the position that if you are not paying what you owe, you are breaking the law.

If you are a Delawarean and have past taxes due to the state, this is good news for you and you should definitely take advantage of the opportunity.  Keep in mind that this offer does NOT include past taxes due to the federal government from those individuals who live in Delaware.  The federal government has no amnesty program and will actively pursue individuals who have not kept current with their tax debt.
